Job Description

I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

The Corcoran School of the Arts and Design bridges the George Washington University’s (GW) academically robust programs in the arts with Corcoran’s creative and inspired scholarship. Part of GW’s Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, the school functions as an incubator for artists and practitioners in arts-related fields, and serves to enrich students who are taking classes in other areas of the university. As such, it provides a platform for engagement that bridges creative expression and practical application with the breadth and depth of the larger liberal arts education.

The Instructional Technologist for Scenic and Performance Labs supports the Corcoran Theatre & Dance Program’s scenic and performance co-curricular laboratories as well as the central school as needed. Corcoran Theatre & Dance (CTAD) produces six fully staged productions per academic year, as well as Theses, End-of-Year Exhibitions, and support of other co-productions and semi-staged work on an as-needed basis. This position reports to the Studio Manager but works closely with the CTAD’s leadership, Technical Director, Faculty, and Staff to ensure timely, safe, and successful performances. Additionally, the position requires frequent night and weekend work during production through the regular Academic year.
The primary responsibilities of this position are:

  • Manage the setup and implementation of equipment in the Performance/Theatre Lab and classroom studio spaces, including staging, scenic, lighting, audio, rigging, and other production areas as necessary.
  • Oversee open studios – acting as a resource for students using the laboratories, ensuring proper utilization of facilities, and providing training and reinforcement for student lab technicians.
  • Oversee studio technicians in preparing necessary materials for the proper functioning of the laboratory spaces.
  • Keep abreast of developments in the fields of Performance, Art, and Production Design to advise faculty and staff on adding new processes and equipment to the Studios and Laboratories.
  • Manage the setup and implementation of equipment in Scenic Lab, including wood, metal, and CNC cutting and milling.
  • Oversee development and implementation of health and safety standards in studio spaces; serve as health and safety contact; and safety training for student workers, faculty, and students.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise student Studio Assistants in the Scenic Laboratory throughout each semester. Contribute to the implementation of an OSHA-compliant staff protocol training system for all student employees.
  • Contribute to studio and laboratory areas’ environmental health and safety by participating in after-hours and weekend oversight of studio spaces as required.
  • On occasion, staff school-wide events such as orientation or graduation along with all other school staff.

Perform other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
